Mizan is a Muslim companion app for prayer times, the Quran, Hadith, dhikr and the Quran Guessr game. We collect as little as we can. You don't need an account to use Mizan, we don't show ads, and we don't sell or share your data for advertising.

What stays on your phone

Your location is used on your phone to calculate prayer times and the qibla direction, and to show your city name. We don't send it to our servers. To turn coordinates into a city name, your phone uses the built-in location service of Apple or Google.

Your settings, reading position, bookmarks, tasbih counts and custom wallpapers are stored only on your phone.

What we collect

Anonymous usage statistics. A random ID created when you install the app, your platform (iOS or Android), app version, the last time you opened the app and how many times you have opened it. This tells us how many people use Mizan and which versions are still in use. It contains no name, email or location.

Wake-up alarms. If you use the Tahajjud or Fajr alarms, the statistics above also say which alarms are switched on. We also count what happens to alarms (for example, that an alarm rang, was stopped, or how many guesses it took) as daily totals across all users. These totals are not linked to your random ID, and they contain no time of day and no location.

Reports you send. If you report a problem with a piece of content, we receive the screen, the content, the reason you chose, anything you typed, and the random ID above, so we can fix it.

Daily inspiration emails. If you subscribe, we keep your email address and language to send you a short daily message. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops the emails.

Contact form. If you write to us, we receive your name, email address and message.

Quran Guessr

Playing without an account. Your player is anonymous: a name you pick from our list of scholars (for example “Imam Nawawi”), your scores and game details (which ayahs came up and what you guessed), and technical identifiers that let the game recognise your phone. On iPhone that is a random ID kept in your phone's Keychain; on Android it is a one-way scrambled code made from your phone's Android ID, so the ID itself never leaves your phone. These identifiers let you keep your name and scores if you reinstall the app. Your chosen name and scores appear on the public leaderboard; nothing else does.

If you don't play for 90 days, your scholar name may be given to another player. You keep your scores under a numbered version of the name.

“Save my progress” (optional). You can create a Quran Guessr account with Sign in with Apple, Google, or a one-time code sent to your email. We then keep your email address (with Apple this can be a private relay address) and, for Apple or Google, the account ID they give us. We use it only to let you sign in and keep the same player on any phone. Your email is never shown to other players and is not used for anything else. The account is used only by Quran Guessr, not by the rest of Mizan.

Playing with friends and classes. Rooms show your player name and score to the others in the room. In a class, students type the name their teacher knows them by; only that class's teacher sees it with the student's answers. Teachers can export a class report, which stays on their phone. Rooms and classes are deleted from our server after 30 days.

Services we rely on

  • Our own server (PocketBase, hosted by Virtarix): stores the data above and the app's content.
  • Resend: delivers emails (sign-in codes and daily inspiration).
  • Apple and Google: only if you choose to sign in with them for Quran Guessr, and for the location services built into your phone.
  • Recitation audio is streamed from EveryAyah (everyayah.com) and its mirror at quranicaudio.com, and Hadith collections are downloaded from jsDelivr. Like any website, these services see your IP address when your phone requests a file.
  • Vercel hosts this website.

How long we keep data

Usage statistics and content reports are kept while they are useful for running and improving the app. Email subscriptions last until you unsubscribe. Quran Guessr players and scores are kept for the leaderboard until you delete your account, or on request. Multiplayer rooms and classes are deleted after 30 days.

Your choices and deleting your data

  • Delete your Quran Guessr account in the app: Quran Guessr → “Progress saved” → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, player name, scores and place on the leaderboard.
  • Stop daily emails: use the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • Anything else (including an anonymous Guessr player, or a copy of your data): write to hello@mizanapp.org and we will help.
  • You can turn off location and notification permissions at any time in your phone's settings. Prayer times then use a location you set by hand.

Children

Mizan is suitable for all ages and Quran Guessr is used in classrooms. Children can play without an account. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children beyond what is described here; a parent or teacher can ask us to delete a child's data at hello@mizanapp.org.

Security

Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Account sign-in is handled by our server with one-time codes or by Apple or Google; we never see or store passwords.

Changes and contact

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Questions: hello@mizanapp.org or the contact form.
